Another hot day in Norway – tho the weather is set to change
because I took all my winter gear, excluding my rain jacket, to the post office
and sent it on its way home again. Sick
of lugging it around! Will probably
regret it, but will get by!
I headed off to the Idrettsparken Hotel where I had reserved
a room the night before. Luckily my room
was already available so I was able to unload Maggie and stagger upstairs with
all my bags.
Then off to town. I
had packed my socks, so first I needed to buy another pair and found some on
special so was laughing. Then I walked
further up the hill and around into the suburbs, just to see what real life was
like. I went past the mining museum, not
really interested in that – but could see the slag heaps on the edge of
town.
The old houses within the town are quite beautiful and one
can feel the history soaked into the timber structures. There were a lot of tourists around –
surprise!! It is basically a tourist
town, but more popular in the winter months and Easter. Now in this hot summer, sat around eating
waffles and drinking coffee and sitting in the blazing sun. I joined in the eating bit, but found a shady
spot! So yes – not being totally perfect
all the time J jam and cream on the melt-in-the mouth
waffles today!
After being up and down the two main streets I went to the
Info office to check on the ferry. A
suggestion of a lake cruise that is going in the general direction I had
planned, seemed like something worthwhile to check. The guy in the office wasn’t too
helpful. He didn’t know if the bus would
take bikes… he didn’t know how the road to the ferry terminal (36km) was and he
was definitely sure one couldn’t ride from Elgå to the Swedish border. When I suggested that route 221 would take me
across the border, he did a quite google maps check and agreed that it
might… so I came back to the hotel and
asked the woman on reception to call the bus company to check. After several calls to different numbers, she
managed get onto someone who said, if
there was room it would be OK. So an
early start in the morning, to get there before the rest of the cycling
community want to go along for the ride… If
it doesn’t pan out – all OK, I will just revert to Plan A and ride on toward
the rising sun! (well, it will be truly risen by then!)
Soooo – another day in this beautiful country – it is such a
“chocolate box cover” country…. And the
people are nice – most speak English well – esp the young in the shops. They are very friendly and they do understand
the meaning of service… so am loving
this visit to Norway!
